Geschichte
Das Staatstheater Mainz hieß bis 1989 Stadttheater Mainz und wurde zwischen 1829 und 1833 durch Georg Moller errichtet. Der Bau war bereits seit Jahrzehnten vom Bürgertum der Stadt Mainz gefordert worden und kostete 280.000 Gulden (der Haushalt der Stadt belief sich damals auf 300.000 Gulden).


Architektur
Der Theaterbau stellte erstmals das Halbrund des Zuschauerraums nach außen hin dar. Als Theaterraum löste es den ehemaligen kurfürstlichen Marstall auf der Großen Bleiche ab, der bis dahin als Platz für die Aufführungen hatte dienen müssen. 1910 wurde Mollers Entwurf durch den Vorbau eines Foyers verwässert. 1997 wurde das Theater um den Neubau des \'Kleinen Hauses\' erweitert. Dieses befindet sich als vermeintlich eigener Baukörper direkt hinter dem Großen Haus, ist neben zwei gläsernen Brücken aber auch unterirdisch mit dem Stammhaus verbunden. Im Zuge umfassender Renovierungs- und Ausbauarbeiten 1998 - 2001 wurde auf dem Dach des Großen Hauses eine in der Allgemeinheit nicht unumstrittene Glaskuppel errichtet, die ein Restaurant beherbergt

Die Naturwissenschaftliche Sammlung bietet derzeit Daueraustellungen auf einer Gesamtfläche von 600 m². Es handelt sich um einen Saal mit Exponaten aus der Geologie, Mineralogie und Paläontologie im Hochparterre und einen Saal mit Tieren der großen Bewuchszonen (Bioma) im 2. Obergeschoß (Tropischer Wald, Savanne, Wüste, Arktis).

DJ Tomo Polic is known far beyond Frankfurt’s club scene for his explosive mix- ture of Balkan- and Urban-Electro-Gypsy- Beats, Ska, Cumbia and Electro-Swing. He contributed the music to the world premiere of Daniel Mezger’s play “Balkan Music” at Staatstheater Mainz, which was invited to the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. And now he is going to turn the festival tent into a “Bal- kan Ballroom”.

How we became what we are – Collective Traumas in the Theatre
How does a society deal with collective memories, how does it process communal traumas? In the countries of the Balkans, the visible and invisible aftermath of war is still a part of everyday life; in Ireland, an entire nation must ask itself why the systematic abuse of children in institutions run by the Catholic Church remained undetected for so long. In Poland, too, the events of the past 50 years have left their mark on the populations’ self-image. The theatre is a place where painful events can be accounted for together. The younger generation of theatre makers courageously puts its fingers in old, badly healed wounds and confronts the consequences of history. Gina Moxley and Małgorzata Sikorska- Miszczuk, the festival’s patrons from Ireland and Poland, and Filip Vujošević, co-author and dramaturg of Hypermnesia”, talk to Peter Michalzik about the methods and devices their theatre uses to approach these important and delicate issues. Bad Credit - Reading and converstation with Petros Markaris
The entire country is paralysed by the financial crisis, and now a series of murders at several banks further terrorizes Athen’s world of finance. Press and police no longer rule out the possibility that there may be terrorists at work, and hatred of the banks is growing. This situation calls for patience and caution, but Inspector Kostas Charidos has neither. Time is money and money is scarce … Petros Markaris, prominent author and the festival’s patron for Greece, presents the most recent (2011) addition to his successful series of crime novels, which the taz called “the incursion of Greek tragedy into the light novel.” Moderated by Christopher Schmidt (Süddeutsche Zeitung)

„We came here to funk you!“ lautet die Mission der Top Dog Brass Band aus Dresden. Die seit zehn Jahren bestehende Kapelle um Frontmann Matthias Peuker erfüllt sie spielend in ihren spektakulären Walkacts, Konzerten und Straßenparaden und reißt Zuschauer auf Usedom ebenso wie im indischen Goa von den Stühlen auf die Tanzfläche. In Wiesbaden werden die Top Dogs zunächst als Marching Band die Innenstadt und bei Nacht das Festivalzelt rocken.

20 YEARS OF NEW PLAYS FROM EUROPE: What is new? What is a play? What is Europe?
Since the start of the festival, the number of European countries has doubled – and so has the number of opinions on what constitutes a (new) play and what does not. The internationally renowned playwright Hristo Boytchev has been connected to the Theatre-Biennale for years. In conversation with the critic Thomas Koch, with Thomas Irmer and Tankred Dorst, dramatist and cofounder of the festival, they will examine how the festival’s programme has reflected the fundamental changes in art and society, and which developments can be traced in the work of theatre makers. The Challenge of Theatre Translation
Theatre texts come alive when they are spoken. Only when the actors have uttered them on stage have they arrived where the author intended them to be. Rhythm and euphony are of special importance when translating for the stage. To provide a very basic impression of a translator’s work, we are planning a short practical exercise: the audience will have the chance to join the professionals at their desks and to ponder their translations with them. Maybe you will come up with a great solution for a tricky line, or with a fitting German phrase? After this demonstration, the experts – translators and editors of theatre texts – will talk about their work and discuss the special challenges they face in view of the increasingly international theatre market. Discover tomorrow’s most successful European plays today! In a translation workshop organised by the International Theatre Institute and headed by Barbara Christ, six theatre translators worked on six new European plays, exchanged ideas, talked to the authors and followed the staging of their work. A presentation of staged readings, the workshop’s culmination, will convince experts, audience, authors and translators that an outstanding translation is an artistic creation in its own right. And that only a successful translation will enable a German audience to truly discover these new plays from Europe. Staged by Benjamin Schad and Jan Stephan Schmieding.

THE HEART OF THURSDAY NIGHT: Beyer, Wellings & Friends in concert
In 2010, Lars Wellings, a member of Staatstheater Wiesbaden’s acting company, invited festival guests to “melt in the tent”. This year, together with his colleague Franziska Beyer and some surprise guests, he will sing and play songs between jazz and pop, ranging from Tom Waits to Rebekka Bakken to Amy Winehouse.

Manuela Reichart invites some of the Theatre-Biennale’s patrons into her salon: During the festival’s research, these playwrights work unselfishly for the benefit of their countries’ contemporary theatre. In these conversations, the attention will be focused entirely on their own creative work. Because these renowned dramatists are also writers of many other genres: they translate, they write radio-plays, prose and screenplays for film and television. In dialogues with Manuela Reichart, they will talk about their own work and reveal varied insights into their literary oeuvre. Festivals give our audiences access to a diverse multitude of artistic signatures and to the current issues of other theatre cultures.Guest performances and co-productions with European partners have become general practice in running a theatre. New partners bring along new models of working, rehearsing and producing. The daily work is changing: for some institutions, co-productions are already the main model of funding. How do artistic ideas and economic exigencies go together in the face of these new developments? All panelists in this discussion, initiated by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), represent institutions which feature in the international theatre scene. The Fundamental Right to Freedom of the Arts in the EU-Countries
Paragraph 13 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights states: “The arts and scientific research shall be free of constraint.” An obvious fact, and a matter of course in EUcountries, one might think. The implementation of this basic right, however, is tricky and often leads to social and political conflicts. On the one hand, artists furiously resist any exertion of external influence, especially by the state and its authorities. Art, they argue, must be allowed to develop free from ideological or political constraint. But how do we deal with society’s concerns about an unlimited freedom of artistic expression? Theatre makers from the Netherlands and Hungary will discuss this controversial topic, joined by Dr. Thomas Engel, executive director of the German Centre of the ITI and secretary of the ITI Action Committee for Artists’ Rights. This will be followed by the award ceremony for the prize for the best translation of a play, endowed by the WIESBADENER KURIER, and the audience award for the most popular production. Followed by a presentation of the results of the FORUM OF EUROPEAN DRAMATISTS, the DRAMATURGY FORUM and the FORUM OF YOUNG THEATRE CRITICS.
